Sarkari result GDS is what lakhs of students type after class 10, because the Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) bharti (recruitment) of India Post has no written exam and picks people from their class 10 marks. This page explains the three GDS posts, who can apply, how the merit list is made, and what to do once your name appears.
We also cover the other post office jobs that come through SSC and departmental exams. This is an independent help page, not an India Post website. The newest GDS and post office notices we have published appear in two live lists lower on the page.

GDS full form in Hindi and what a Dak Sevak does
GDS stands for Gramin Dak Sevak, in Hindi ग्रामीण डाक सेवक. A Dak Sevak works in a village branch post office or in a sub post office and keeps the postal service running in rural India. GDS staff are engaged by the Department of Posts and are paid a Time Related Continuity Allowance (TRCA) linked to their working hours, not a regular departmental pay level. Many people treat it as a first step, since serving GDS can later sit for departmental exams for posts like Multi Tasking Staff and Postman.
| Post | Where you work | Typical work |
|---|---|---|
| Branch Postmaster (BPM) | Village branch post office | Runs the branch office, handles cash, savings accounts, India Post Payments Bank services and records |
| Assistant Branch Postmaster (ABPM) | Village branch post office | Delivers letters and parcels, sells stamps, helps the BPM with counter and bank work |
| Dak Sevak | Sub post office or head post office | Sorting, carrying and delivering mail, and other duties given by the postmaster |
The exact duties and working hours are written in the notice for each post.
Who can apply for post office bharti as a GDS
The basic conditions in recent GDS notices look like this. Always read the notice for your circle before applying, because small details change.
- Education: class 10 pass from a recognised board, with Mathematics and English passed as subjects.
- Local language: you must have studied the local language of the circle (for example Hindi in UP or Bihar, Odia in Odisha, Punjabi in Punjab) at least up to class 10.
- Age: usually 18 to 40 years, with relaxation for reserved categories. The age calculator tool on our sarkari naukri hub tells you your exact age on the notice date.
- Computer knowledge: basic computer skills, usually shown by a certificate or by having computer as a school or college subject. Check what the notice accepts.
- Cycling: you should know how to ride a bicycle. Knowing how to ride a scooter or motorcycle is generally accepted too.
- Livelihood: older notices asked BPM applicants for an adequate means of livelihood; check whether your schedule still has this condition.
Higher marks in class 12 or graduation get no extra weight. Only class 10 counts.
How the sarkari result GDS merit list is prepared
The merit list is computer generated. Your class 10 marks are turned into a percentage, and if your board gave grades or CGPA, the notice explains how they are converted into marks. Candidates in each division are then ranked by that percentage for each post and category, against the posts they chose.
Ties are settled by rules given in the notice, such as date of birth. Because there is no exam, two things decide your chance: your class 10 percentage and which division and posts you choose. A division with fewer applicants or more vacancies can give a better chance than your home town division, but you then have to work there.
Example: Ravi from Gaya has 91.4 percent in class 10. In his home division the last selected UR candidate for ABPM may have had a higher score, while a nearby division may close lower. He can only see this after the list comes out, so he checks the previous schedule's lists to get a rough idea before choosing.
How to apply on the GDS online engagement portal
All GDS applications are made on the official GDS online engagement portal, indiapostgdsonline.gov.in. India Post runs it in rounds called schedules, and each schedule has its own notice.
- Read the schedule notice and the circle-wise vacancy list on the portal.
- Do the one-time registration using a phone number and email that belong to you. Both are checked by OTP, and one person can register only once.
- Sign in using the GDS registration number, then enter your class 10 board, roll number, year and marks exactly as printed on the marksheet.
- Add your photograph and signature scans within the file size limits.
- Pay the fee online if your category has to pay. Women, SC, ST, PwBD and trans women applicants were exempt in recent notices.
- Choose your circle, division and post preferences carefully, then submit and download the printout.
If a correction window opens, use it only to fix real mistakes. For general form filling habits see our sarkari naukri guide.
Post office result: how to check the GDS merit list
India Post does not send a scorecard. The post office result for GDS comes as shortlisted candidate lists on the engagement portal, one PDF for each postal circle. Each list shows registration number, division, post, category and percentage.
- Open the portal and find the shortlisted candidates link for your schedule.
- Pick your circle (for example Uttar Pradesh, Bihar or Chhattisgarh) and open the PDF.
- Search the file for your registration number.
- If your number is there, note the division office named against it and the last date to report.
When selected people do not join, India Post publishes a second, third or further merit list for the same schedule. So if your name is not in the first list, keep checking. The live list below shows the GDS notices we post, including merit lists.

All GDS noticesDocument verification after your name appears
Being in the list is only provisional engagement. You must go to the divisional office named in the list, within the time given, with originals and self-attested copies. Keep this file ready:
- Class 10 marksheet and certificate (the same board and roll number you entered)
- Category certificate (SC, ST, OBC, EWS) in the central format, if the notice says so
- PwBD certificate, if you applied in that category
- Computer certificate, if computer was not your school subject
- Aadhaar or another identity card, plus a few passport photos
- Medical fitness certificate, when asked
After this the division checks your documents and may ask you to undergo short training before you join. Some divisions ask for a short biodata at this stage, and you can build that biodata with our resume maker and print it.
Common reasons people lose a GDS seat: wrong marks typed in the form, a different board or roll number than the marksheet, local language not studied up to class 10, a category certificate that does not match, or not reporting by the last date. Fake calls and messages asking for money for a GDS posting are a fraud. India Post does not take money for selection.
Other India Post jobs and the ssc dak sevak confusion
People often search "ssc dak sevak", but SSC does not recruit Gramin Dak Sevaks. Here is who fills which post office job:

| Gramin Dak Sevak (BPM, ABPM, Dak Sevak) | India Post circles | Class 10 merit on the GDS portal |
| Postal Assistant, Sorting Assistant | Staff Selection Commission | CHSL exam on ssc.gov.in |
| Multi Tasking Staff in post offices | SSC and departmental exams | SSC MTS exam or promotion of serving GDS |
| Postman, Mail Guard | India Post circles | Mostly departmental exams for serving staff; check circle notices |
| Staff Car Driver and similar posts | India Post circles or units | Separate notices on indiapost.gov.in |

Post office information in Hindi: how the network is organised
Post office kya hai, in simple words? It is the postal network of the Government of India run by the Department of Posts. The country is split into postal circles (mostly one per state), each circle into divisions, and each division has head post offices, sub post offices and village branch post offices. GDS vacancies are announced circle-wise and filled division-wise, which is why you choose a circle first and then divisions.
Besides letters and parcels, post offices run savings schemes, India Post Payments Bank accounts and insurance. That is why a BPM post needs basic computer work and careful cash handling.
Tips before you apply for post office bharti
- Apply in one circle where you know the local language. A wrong language claim is caught at verification.
- Look at the earlier merit lists of that circle to judge which divisions close lower.
- Choose only posts you are ready to join. If you are selected and do not report, you lose that chance.
- Keep your registered mobile number active till joining.
- Follow notices for your state on pages like UP jobs and Bihar jobs, and compare GDS with other matric level options in our list of jobs after class 10.

Questions people ask
Is there any exam for GDS in the post office?
No. In recent notices GDS selection is based only on class 10 marks, followed by document verification. Higher qualifications do not add marks. Always confirm in the notice of the schedule you apply for.
GDS merit list mein naam kaise dekhe?
On the GDS online engagement portal, look for the shortlisted candidates list for your schedule, choose your circle and open the PDF. Search for your registration number. If it is there, report to the division office named against it before the last date.
What is the difference between BPM, ABPM and Dak Sevak?
A BPM runs a village branch post office and is responsible for cash and accounts. An ABPM mainly delivers mail and helps at the counter in the same branch. A Dak Sevak works in a sub or head post office on mail and related duties.
Can I apply for GDS in another state?
Yes, but you must have studied that circle's local language up to class 10. Recent notices have let a candidate apply in one circle only per schedule, so pick it with care and confirm the rule in the current notice.
When does the post office result come after applying?
India Post usually publishes the first merit list some weeks after the application window closes, and further lists follow when seats stay empty. Timing differs between schedules, so keep an eye on the GDS portal and on the GDS notices listed above.
Does SSC recruit Dak Sevak or postman?
No. SSC fills Postal Assistant and Sorting Assistant posts through CHSL and some MTS posts. Gramin Dak Sevaks are engaged by India Post circles through the GDS portal.
