The syllabus (pathyakram) tells you what can be asked, and the exam pattern tells you how it will be asked: number of papers, questions, marks, time and negative marking. This page shows how to read both, explains the subjects that repeat in SSC, railway and state exams, and points you to where the official syllabus for Bihar and UP exams such as BSSC inter level, Bihar SI and UPSSSC posts is published.
You will also find how to use previous year papers and how to turn a syllabus into a daily study plan. New syllabus notices posted on this site are listed below as they come. This site is independent; the syllabus in the official notification is the only one that binds the exam.

Search terms like sarkari result syllabus mean the same thing: people want one place to see which exams have released or revised a syllabus. For forms that are open now, see the free job alert page.
How to read a syllabus and exam pattern
Open the notification PDF and find the part called scheme of examination, exam pattern or pathyakram. Then note these points on one page:
- Stages: prelims, mains, skill or typing test, physical test, interview, document verification. Some stages are only qualifying, which means you must pass but the marks do not count in merit.
- Papers and sections: the subjects, how many questions in each and marks per question.
- Time: total time and whether each section has its own time limit.
- Negative marking: how much is cut for a wrong answer. This changes how many guesses you should take.
- Qualifying marks: minimum percentage in a paper or section, often different by category.
- Language and mode: Hindi, English or both; computer based or pen and paper.
- Level of questions: notices often say matriculation level, intermediate level or graduate level. This tells you how deep to study.
Write the topics of each subject as a checklist. That list becomes your study plan and your revision record.
Common subjects in SSC, railway and state exams
Most clerk, constable, assistant and technician level exams draw from the same pool of subjects. The weight and level change, the topics do not change much.
| Subject | Usual topics |
|---|---|
| General awareness or general studies | History, geography, polity, economy, general science, current affairs, sports and awards; state GK in state exams |
| Reasoning or mental ability | Analogy, series, coding decoding, blood relations, direction, ranking, syllogism, puzzles, non verbal figures |
| Quantitative aptitude or maths | Number system, percentage, ratio, average, profit and loss, interest, time and work, speed and distance, mensuration, algebra and geometry at higher levels |
| English or Hindi language | Grammar, vocabulary, comprehension, error spotting, fill in the blanks; Hindi vyakaran in many state exams |
| General science | Physics, chemistry and biology at class 10 level, important in railway exams |
| Computer knowledge | Basics of computers, MS Office, internet, shortcuts; asked in many clerk and assistant posts |
| Subject paper | For teachers, lecturers, engineers and technical posts: the subject of your degree or diploma |
Teacher exams add child development and pedagogy, explained on the CTET and teacher jobs page. Railway and police exams also have physical and medical standards, covered on the railway and police pages.
Bihar exams: BSSC syllabus and Bihar SI syllabus
BSSC (Bihar SSC): the Bihar Staff Selection Commission publishes the syllabus inside each advertisement on bssc.bihar.gov.in. The BSSC inter level exam (also called the 10+2 level or 12th level exam) has used, in past notices, a prelims in three parts (general studies, general science and mathematics, and mental ability) and a mains with Hindi included, while the scheme and the negative marking rule have since been revised. Document verification comes at the end. For the Bihar SSC inter level syllabus, the BSSC inter level syllabus pdf download is simply the advertisement PDF; read the latest one, because papers and marks have changed between notices.
Bihar SI or daroga: the Bihar police SI syllabus is set by the Bihar Police Subordinate Services Commission on bpssc.bihar.gov.in. The Bihar SI exam pattern usually has a prelims on general knowledge and current affairs, then a mains with a qualifying General Hindi paper and a General Studies paper (science, civics, history, geography, maths and mental ability) that decides merit, then a physical test. The Bihar daroga syllabus in Hindi is given in the same notice. Constable exams are run separately by CSBC; see the Bihar jobs page.
UP exams: UPSSSC, police and teacher syllabus
- UPSSSC junior assistant syllabus: for most group C posts, the UP Subordinate Services Selection Commission first shortlists by PET score and then holds a mains. For junior assistant, the mains covers Hindi, general intelligence, general knowledge, UP GK and computer basics, followed by a qualifying typing test at the speed given in the notice. The notice is on upsssc.gov.in, with a Hindi version.
- UPSSSC stenographer syllabus: written papers on Hindi and general topics, then a shorthand and typing test. The shorthand speed decides a lot, so start practice early.
- Lekhpal exam pattern: PET based shortlisting, then a written mains with rural development and village society along with general subjects. Read the exact list in the advertisement.
- UP police assistant operator and radio operator: set by the UP Police Recruitment and Promotion Board on uppbpb.gov.in. These posts usually have physics, maths and electronics or computer topics along with general subjects.
- UP TGT and PGT: what people search as the SSB syllabus or the UPSESSB PGT syllabus is now set by UPESSC, the state's teacher selection commission for secondary schools, on upessc.up.gov.in. The written test is on your teaching subject at graduate or postgraduate level.
- Junior aided syllabus: the aided junior high school teacher exam in UP has been conducted by the Exam Regulatory Authority (Pariksha Niyamak Pradhikari), Prayagraj, in past rounds. Check which body the current notice names, and its subjects and Hindi PDF.
How to use previous year question papers
Old papers show you what the syllabus really means. Two lines in a syllabus can produce ten questions, while a long topic may produce one.
- Collect papers of the same exam and level from the last few cycles. Many commissions publish question papers or answer keys with questions on their website.
- Solve one full paper in the real time limit, before you start studying, to see where you stand.
- Mark each question by topic on your syllabus checklist. You will see which topics repeat.
- Give more time to topics that repeat and that you can master quickly, like percentage, series or Hindi grammar.
- In the last month, solve one paper every few days under exam conditions and check with the key, using the method on the answer key page.
Questions do repeat in idea, rarely word for word. Learn the method behind each question instead of memorising answers.
Making a study plan from the syllabus
- Count the days to the likely exam and divide them into three parts: learning, practice and revision.
- Daily mix: one hour of maths, one hour of reasoning, one hour of GK and current affairs, and thirty minutes of language. Adjust for your weak areas.
- Use school books first. NCERT or your state board books from class 6 to 10 cover most of general science, history, geography and polity at this level.
- Weekly test: every week, take one mock or old paper and note the mistakes in a separate notebook.
- Current affairs: read one newspaper daily and make short monthly notes. Most exams ask about the last six to twelve months.
- Revision: keep the last few weeks only for revision and full papers. Do not start new books then.
Common mistakes: studying from a syllabus copied from an old notice, ignoring a qualifying paper like Hindi, skipping typing or shorthand practice till the written result, and buying many books instead of finishing one.
Questions people ask
Where can I download the official syllabus PDF?
In most exams the syllabus is part of the notification itself, usually an annexure near the end. Download the notification from the commission's website. Some bodies also post a separate syllabus PDF in the same section.
Bihar daroga ka syllabus kya hai?
The Bihar SI exam usually has a prelims on general knowledge and current affairs, then a mains with a qualifying Hindi paper and a General Studies paper, followed by a physical test. The full topic list is in the BPSSC notice in Hindi and English.
Is the BSSC inter level syllabus the same as the 10+2 level syllabus?
Yes, BSSC uses inter level, 10+2 level and 12th level for the same group of exams. Each new advertisement can change the pattern, so follow the latest one.
Is the syllabus of SSC and railway exams the same?
They share reasoning, maths and general awareness, but railway exams give more weight to general science and SSC exams test English. Level and marks also differ. Read each notice separately.
How many previous year papers should I solve?
Solve every paper of your exam you can find from the last few cycles, at least once in real time. Quality of review matters more than the number solved.
Do qualifying papers really matter?
Yes. If you fail a qualifying paper, such as a Hindi paper or a typing test, you are out even with high marks elsewhere. Give them steady practice.
