Sarkari Exam: Families, Stages, Preparation and Results

CBT to medicalNormalisationUpdated 21 Oct 2026

Every sarkari exam (sarkari pariksha) belongs to a family of similar tests, and once you understand the family, you know roughly what the paper looks like, which stages follow and how the result will be declared. This page explains the main families, each selection stage, how to prepare without wasting months, how marks are normalised across shifts, and how answer keys and results are released.

The newest exam related notices on this site, such as exam dates and exam city slips, are listed lower on the page.

The main sarkari exam families

Thousands of posts are filled through a much smaller number of exams. Learn these families and most notices will feel familiar.

Within a family the papers change slowly. An SSC CGL aspirant and an SSC CHSL aspirant prepare many of the same subjects, which is why people often write both. People who search for an SSC CGL sarkari result or an SSC MTS result are really looking for the commission's own result notice, which this site links in each result post.

Exam stages, one by one

Not every recruitment uses every stage. The notice lists the stages in order and says which ones carry marks and which are only qualifying.

  • Computer based test (CBT): objective questions on a computer at a test centre. Many exams have negative marking for wrong answers. Some have two tiers, where the first only shortlists.
  • PET and PST: physical efficiency test (running, jumping) and physical standards test (height, chest, weight) for police, armed police, some railway and forest posts. Usually qualifying only.
  • Skill or typing test: typing speed on computer for clerk and data entry posts, shorthand for stenographers, trade tests for technical posts. Usually qualifying.
  • Interview or personality test: for officer posts and some state posts. Many lower posts have no interview.
  • Document verification (DV): originals are checked against your form. Wrong category or date of birth in the form can end your candidature here.
  • Medical exam: eyesight, fitness and other standards set for the post. Uniformed and railway safety posts have strict medical categories.

For hall tickets and exam city slips, see the admit card page. For a clean biodata to carry to DV or an interview, use the resume maker.

Preparation basics that work for most exams

  1. Start with the official syllabus. Print the syllabus and exam pattern from the notice. Our syllabus and pattern page explains common subjects.
  2. Solve past papers. Several commissions put old papers, or keys that include the questions, on their websites. These show the real level better than any guess.
  3. Build basics before speed. Arithmetic, reasoning, basic English or Hindi grammar and general awareness appear in most exams. Strengthen them first.
  4. Take timed practice tests. Practise on a computer screen if the exam is a CBT, so the format does not surprise you.
  5. Keep a mistake notebook. Write every wrong answer and why. Revise it weekly.
  6. Prepare for the physical early. If the post has a PET, start running months before, not after the written result.

Pick two or three exams from the same family rather than ten unrelated ones. Overlapping syllabus means each hour of study helps more than one attempt.

What normalisation means for your marks

Large exams are held over many days and shifts, and no two shifts can have papers of exactly equal difficulty. To be fair, bodies such as SSC and railway boards convert raw scores to normalised scores with a method that their notices describe. A candidate in a tougher shift may gain a little, one in an easier shift may lose a little.

So the raw score you calculate from the answer key is only an estimate. The result and the scorecard show the normalised score, and selection uses that. Do not trust anyone who claims to predict your exact final marks from your shift. The exact method can change, so read the normalisation clause in your own notice.

Answer keys, objections and the sarkari exam result

Most bodies publish a provisional answer key along with your response sheet some days after the exam. You get a short window to challenge answers, often with a fee per question, and experts review the challenges. A final key follows, and the result is prepared from it. Our answer key page walks through objections in detail.

A sarkari exam result is usually released as a PDF of qualified roll numbers, a merit list or a scorecard login on the official website, along with category wise cut offs. To find exam result info quickly, keep your roll number, login ID and date of birth handy. If you are after exam sarkari result info for class 10 or class 12, that comes from a school board, not a recruiting body, so see board results. Every result notice we post is also shown on the sarkari result board, so any exam sarkari result info you need is one tap away from there.

Choosing which exams to write

Look at three things: your qualification, your age window and your strengths. A 12th pass candidate aged 19 has many years of SSC, railway and state exams ahead and can build up slowly. A graduate close to the upper age limit should focus on the exams where the remaining attempts matter most. If you are strong in physical fitness, police and armed police posts reward that. If you type fast, clerk and data entry posts value that skill.

The sarkari naukri guide shows which posts open at each qualification. To track new forms so you never miss a registration window, follow the routine on free job alert.

Questions people ask

Which sarkari exam is easiest to start with?

There is no easy exam, only ones that suit your qualification. Many 10th and 12th pass candidates begin with SSC MTS, SSC GD, railway level 1 or their state's constable exam because the syllabus is basic. Graduates often start with SSC CHSL or CGL and bank clerk exams.

Where can I check the SSC CGL sarkari result?

The official result is published by the Staff Selection Commission on ssc.gov.in, usually as a PDF list and later as scorecards. This site posts a short notice with the link when it is out.

Why are my final marks different from the answer key marks?

Because of normalisation in multi-shift exams, and because the final key may change some answers after objections. Your scorecard shows the normalised marks that are used for selection.

Is the physical test counted in merit?

In most police and armed police recruitments the PET is only qualifying: you need to clear it, but its marks do not add to your merit. Some states do give marks for physical events. Check the selection section of your notice.

What is the difference between a sarkari exam result and a board result?

A sarkari exam result is for a recruitment or eligibility test held by a commission or board. A board result is your class 10 or 12 marks from the school education board. Both are published on official websites but they are separate things.

How do I know when an exam date is announced?

Bodies publish an exam schedule notice or release exam city slips and admit cards some days before the exam. Watch the Exam and Admit Card lists on this site and the notice section of the official website.
