How and when an admit card is released

Once the last date of the form is over, the recruiting body checks the applications, fixes the exam centres and then opens the admit card link. The order is nearly always the same:

• Exam schedule notice: the body announces the exam dates or date range on its website.
• Exam city slip: many bodies, like the railway boards and SSC, show your exam city and date about a week or two in advance so you can book travel.
• Admit card: the actual pass with your centre address, reporting time and shift usually comes a few days before your own date. In multi-shift exams, each candidate's card opens only a few days before his or her own date, so a friend may get the card before you.
• Later stages: a fresh admit card or call letter is issued for each stage, such as mains, typing test, physical test (PET or PST), skill test, interview or document verification.

For UPSC exams, the e-admit card is published on the commission's website for each exam, including NDA. For bank exams, the IBPS PO, IBPS clerk, SBI PO and SBI clerk admit card (prelims and mains are separate) comes from the IBPS or SBI careers website. No body sends a printed card by post for big written exams any more.

Always use the website printed in the notification. These are the usual places:

Railway exams are run by the regional RRBs; the notice tells you the common link. Board exam hall tickets are a different thing, covered under board results.

Steps to download your admit card

This is how you get admit card copies for nearly every online exam. For the online admit card download on a phone, use a normal browser, allow pop-ups and downloads, and turn off data saver mode if the PDF does not open.

Forgot your registration number or password

This is the most common reason people cannot download. Try these in order:

• Search your email inbox and SMS for the registration message sent when you filled the form. Check the spam folder too.
• Look at the printout or PDF of your submitted form. The number is printed at the top.
• Use the Forgot registration number or Know your registration number link, if the site has one. It usually asks for your name, date of birth and father's name, or your registered mobile number or email.
• For a password, use Forgot password. An OTP goes to the mobile number or email you gave in the form, so keep that SIM active till the whole bharti (recruitment) is over.
• If nothing works, write to the helpdesk email or call the helpline number given in the notice. Mention your name, date of birth, post, payment reference and mobile number.

Keep a small notebook or a note file with every registration number, password and payment reference for each form. It saves a lot of trouble later at the result and document stages.

What to check on the admit card

Check these the same day you download it, not on the morning of the exam:

• Your name, father's or mother's name and date of birth, spelt the same as on your photo ID and certificates.
• Photo and signature: both should be yours and clearly visible.
• Category, gender and PwBD status, if shown.
• Exam date, shift, reporting time and gate closing time.
• Full centre address with centre code. Look it up on a map the day before.
• Post name, exam name and roll number.
• Whether a scribe or compensatory time has been allowed, if you asked for it.

What to carry to the exam centre

• Printed admit card. A copy on your phone is not accepted at most centres.
• Original photo ID whose details match the admit card: Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card, driving licence or passport are the usual ones. The admit card lists what is accepted for your exam.
• Passport size photos, the same as you uploaded in the form, if the instructions ask for them.
• A transparent ball pen if it is a pen and paper (OMR) exam.
• Any certificate the card mentions, such as a PwBD certificate for a scribe.

Leave behind your mobile phone, smart watch, calculator, earphones, bags and written material. Many centres have no safe place to keep them. Reach well before the reporting time, because gates close on time and biometric or photo checks take a while.

If your name changed after marriage or the ID shows a different spelling, carry the gazette notification or marriage certificate along with the ID.

Exam city slip, admit card and other names for it

People often mix these up:

• Exam city slip or city intimation: only tells your city and date. You cannot enter the hall with it.
• Admit card, e-admit card, hall ticket, call letter: all mean the entry pass with your centre and time. Railway boards often call it an e-call letter.
• Dummy admit card: state school boards, like the Bihar board, issue it before 10th and 12th exams only so that students can get spelling and subject mistakes corrected. The final 10th class admit card comes later through the school.
• Status or application status: some state bodies show whether your form was accepted or rejected before cards come out. If it says rejected, read the reason and write to the body quickly.

Common admit card problems and fixes

• Site not opening: heavy traffic on the first day is normal. Try early morning or late night, and use the direct link from the body's own notice.
• "Invalid details": check the date format, the difference between O and 0, and whether you picked the right stage of the exam.
• Photo or signature not visible: download again; if it is still blank, take two photos and a printout of the form to the centre and write to the helpdesk.
• Centre too far: centres cannot be changed after allotment in most exams. Plan travel early.
• Clash of two exams on the same day: you must pick one. Bodies rarely change dates for one candidate.
